Introduction: The Natural Disaster in January 2026

In January 2026, Mount Maunganui experienced record-breaking rainfall that caused a landslide, resulting in the tragic loss of precious lives.

This was described as a “once-in-a-century” extreme weather event and deeply affected academy staff and the local community.

Since then, safety checks and preventative measures have been implemented, and academy activities have gradually resumed in a stable manner.

The way the local community has come together in support is one of the defining characteristics of this town.

1. A Rugby Environment That Grows With Nature

Inside Running Rugby Academy is based in the stunning coastal town of Mount Maunganui (Tauranga), one of the most beautiful locations in New Zealand.

Surrounded by both ocean and hills, this environment nurtures not only rugby skills but also personal growth.

The iconic Mauao (Mount Maunganui), which overlooks the town, is part of the players’ daily landscape.

It serves as a reminder of respect for nature and humility — important qualities both on and off the field.

2. What Is Daily Life Like at the Academy?

Inside Running Rugby Academy runs development camps primarily between January and March, typically lasting between 2 and 6 weeks.

The three key features of their training approach are:

  • A strong focus on fundamentals, in true New Zealand style
  • Small-group coaching with close individual attention
  • Game-based training designed to develop decision-making skills

Players also have the opportunity to train at facilities used by professional teams, including those competing in Super Rugby.

Being exposed to such a high-performance environment up close is one of the academy’s major strengths.

3. Physical Development — Safe and Sustainable

From 2026, the academy has introduced an online physical training programme that participants can access remotely.

The programme is led by Head S&C Coach Kate Hamilton. Key features include:

  • Age- and body-appropriate training plans
  • Injury-prevention focused foundational work
  • Programmes designed with adolescent growth in mind

This means players can experience New Zealand-style conditioning even while remaining in Japan.

4. 2026 Camp Overview (Key Points)

In 2026, the academy plans to run several types of camps:

  • Short- to mid-term camps (2–8 weeks)
  • Intensive 10-night, 11-day camps
  • Long-term development programmes (3–5 months)

Scholarships are available for players facing financial challenges, and group discounts are offered for multiple participants.
