1. 99.9% of Japanese never know! What is New Zealand’s “Zealong Tea”?
While New Zealand is widely known for its coffee and wine, it is also home to high-quality certified organic tea production.
Zealong Tea – a 100% certified organic tea grown in New Zealand’s only commercial tea estate – is a hidden gem known to those in the know.
What makes it even more exceptional is its rarity: outside of Asia, Zealong Tea Estate is the only place in the world that cultivates oolong tea on a commercial scale.
In this section, we’ll explore the unique appeal and key characteristics of Zealong Tea, as well as the story behind its development.

Zealong Tea takes full advantage of New Zealand’s clean environment and ideal climate conditions to produce its own uniquely high-quality tea leaves.
When it comes to tea production, countries like Japan, China, and India are typically well known. However, the Waikato region – where Zealong Tea’s estate is located – also offers excellent conditions for growing tea.
For example, the area’s abundant rainfall, ample sunshine, free-draining acidic soil, and perfectly balanced temperatures all contribute to ideal tea cultivation. Notably, the region’s distinctive Hamilton fog plays an important role in maintaining the humidity needed for healthy tea plants.
【Zealong Tea is lower in caffeine】
Due to the unique growing environment in New Zealand, Zealong teas naturally contain less caffeine compared to those from traditional tea-producing regions, making them lower than the industry standard.
The origins of Zealong Tea|A passion for premium oolong
The story of Zealong Tea began with Vincent Chen and his father, who immigrated to New Zealand from China with a shared vision.
The land, which was once a cattle farm around 30 years ago, has since been transformed into a certified organic tea estate spanning approximately 48 hectares.
Today, more than 1.2 million Camellia trees, which are tea trees, grow there, producing up to 20 tonnes of tea leaves annually.
A quick look at the journey of Zealong Tea
📌 1996 – Trial cultivation began with 130 cuttings imported from traditional Asian tea-growing regions.
📌 2009 – Official launch of the Zealong Tea brand.
📌 Since 2016 – Served in luxury restaurants and hotels around the world.
[Background] The story behind the founding of Zealong Tea
The story of the birth of Zealong Tea is written on the wall of the Zealong flagship store, as follows:
Vincent Chen, originally from China, was inspired by New Zealand’s pristine environment, rich soil, and favourable climate to ask himself: “Could high-quality oolong tea be cultivated in this land?”
In 1996, he imported 1,500 carefully selected tea cuttings from some of the best tea-growing regions in Asia. After undergoing a strict 10-month quarantine process, only 130 cuttings survived.
From these, he gradually began trial cultivation. Despite challenges such as strong winds, cold temperatures, and differences in soil compared to China, he successfully overcame the obstacles and achieved commercial-scale tea cultivation.
2. The charm of Zealong Tea|4 reasons you’ll want to tell everyone about it
Zealong Tea has gained global recognition thanks to the exceptionally clean environment of New Zealand and its commitment to producing high-quality tea leaves through strict certified organic practices.
Here, we’ve highlighted four key reasons why Zealong Tea stands out.
- Commitment to Organic Certification and Sustainability
- A clean, pure taste unlike any other
- Eco-friendly, diamond-shaped tea bags
- Global recognition and prestigious awards
Let’s take a closer look at each point.
① Commitment to Organic Certification and Sustainability
One of the most defining features of Zealong Tea is that it is the only 100% certified organic tea grown on a commercial scale in New Zealand.
Cultivated without the use of any chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers, Zealong’s tea leaves are nurtured in New Zealand’s pristine environment and meet some of the world’s strictest organic certification standards.
The Origins Tea series, which will be introduced later, is also certified under Japan’s JAS Organic standard, making it a particularly reassuring organic product for Japanese consumers.
The Botanical series and the Heritage Collection are also certified organic under different standards, so you can enjoy them with confidence as well.
Zealong Tea’s commitment to certified organic excellence
✅ Certified under New Zealand’s government organic certification standards
✅ Completely free from chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilisers
✅ Hand-picked with care, using only the finest, high-quality leaves
As mentioned above, all tea leaves are carefully hand-picked, allowing their natural quality and aroma to be preserved to the fullest.
What’s more, the use of traditional methods such as naturally air-drying the tea leaves by hand reflects Zealong’s unwavering commitment to producing safe, high-quality tea.
② A clean, pure taste unlike any other
Zealong Tea is often praised by tea enthusiasts around the world for its astonishingly clean and refreshing taste.
This unique clarity of taste comes from the distinct terroir – the natural character of the land – shaped by New Zealand’s fresh air, pure water, and mineral-rich soil. The result is a flavour profile unlike that of teas from more traditional regions.
The flavour profile of Zealong Tea
✅ Clean and low in bitterness
→ You can truly taste the tea’s natural sweetness✅ Smooth and easy to drink
→ Whether it’s green, oolong, or black, each variety is light and well-balanced✅ Refreshing, crisp finish
→ Pairs beautifully with all types of food

③ Eco-friendly, diamond-shaped tea bags
Zealong Tea’s tea bags, including the string and tag, are made entirely from natural, organic, and non-GMO sugarcane-based materials.
Source:taria
As a result, the tea bags are fully compostable and sealed using heat – not glue. They are completely free from bleach, dyes, adhesives, and other synthetic additives, allowing you to enjoy the tea’s pure flavour and aroma.
❌ No glue, plastic, staples, or other binding agents
❌ No bleach, colouring agents, or additives
The benefits of pyramid-shaped tea bags
Pyramid tea bags provide more space inside than traditional flat tea bags, allowing the tea leaves to move freely – also known as “jumping” – during brewing.
This enhances the infusion process, helping to draw out the full depth of flavour and aroma from the tea leaves.
For example, when brewing Zealong Tea using their tea set, you can clearly see how the diamond-shaped tea bags allow for a more convenient yet flavourful tea experience.
④ Global recognition and prestigious awards
Zealong Tea’s premium tea leaves have been highly acclaimed at international competitions around the world, and have even been served to the British Royal Family and global leaders.

In the next section, I’ll share some tips on how to enjoy Zealong Tea at its best!
4. How to brew Zealong Tea deliciously|Tips to fully enjoy its flavour
To fully appreciate the charm of Zealong Tea, it’s important to brew it in a way that brings out the best of each tea leaf – and to enjoy pairing it with meals or sweets for an even richer experience.
In this section, I’ll introduce tips for brewing Zealong Tea deliciously, along with ideas to help you create an elevated and relaxing tea time.
Tips for brewing Zealong Tea at its best
Zealong’s teas are high-quality and naturally low in bitterness, so a simple brewing method is often enough to bring out their full flavour.
Recommended brewing methods vary depending on the type of tea. Here are Zealong’s suggested guidelines:
☕ Recommended brewing methods by Zealong Tea ☕
- Oolong tea
Best brewed at 90–95°C- Green tea & black tea
Best brewed at around 80–85°C- Iced tea
Can also be cold-brewed by steeping the leaves in the fridge overnight – a refreshing option!Because Zealong teas are naturally rich in aroma, they are best enjoyed straight, without any added milk or sweeteners.
While it’s generally recommended to use fresh tea leaves each day, a single Zealong tea bag can be steeped up to 8 times in one day, making it both practical and economical.
Tea and food pairing
Pairing your tea with the right food can truly enhance the overall experience.
When enjoying tea at home, the basic rule is simple: “Your favourite tea, with your favourite food.”
Tea pairing should be relaxed and guided by your own preferences.
That said, here are some recommended food pairing ideas that beautifully complement the delicate flavours of Zealong Tea.
🍰 Recommended tea foods 🍰
Type of Tea | Recommended Food Pairings |
Green Tea | Traditional Japanese sweets (e.g. yokan, matcha-based treats) Citrus fruits, berries |
Oolong Tea | Light baked goods (scones, financiers) Nuts, dried fruits |
Black Tea | Scones, assorted sandwiches Desserts (cakes, fruit tarts, etc.) |
Zealong’s black teas are naturally low in bitterness, making them easy to enjoy not only with sweet treats, but also alongside savoury meals.
So don’t hesitate to enjoy Zealong Tea not just at tea time, but with lunch or dinner as well!
A uniquely New Zealand way to enjoy Zealong Tea
Here’s a refreshing recipe introduced at the Zealong flagship store:
Sparkling wine + Zealong Oolong Tea (or Lady Gatsby Blend)Gatsby Blend)
- Add 10g of Zealong Oolong tea leaves (or 4 tea bags) to 1 litre of sparkling wine.
- Let it steep in the fridge for 10–12 hours.
- Once infused, remove the tea leaves and chill well before serving – a refreshing and elegant way to enjoy Zealong.

[Note] Frequently asked questions about enjoying Zealong Tea
Here are three of the most common questions from the official Zealong website, along with their answers:
Q1. What kind of water is best for brewing tea?
A1. Spring water or filtered water is recommended.
Mineral water, while drinkable, can sometimes overpower the delicate flavour of the tea due to its strong mineral content.
Q2. How many times can I re-use the same tea leaves?
A2. While it’s generally best to use fresh tea leaves each day, you can re-steep the same leaves multiple times within a single day – up to around 8 infusions.
Q3. How long should I steep the tea for?
A3. For the first 1 to 3 infusions, steep the tea for about 1 minute. From the 4th infusion onwards, add 1 minute per steep as a general rule. Of course, feel free to adjust this based on your personal taste.
Now, in the next section, I’ll take a deep dive into the Zealong Tea Estate – the very place where Zealong Tea is cultivated, and a must-visit destination when you’re in New Zealand.

Tea from New Zealand? It might sound like an unexpected combination – but as you can see from these reviews, nearly all the feedback is overwhelmingly positive.
If you ever get the chance, I truly encourage you to give Zealong Tea a try.

Now, in the next section, I’ll answer a common question: “Where can you buy Zealong Tea?” And more importantly – “Is it available in Japan?”
7. Where to Buy Zealong Tea, including a City-by-City List of Locations
In this section, I will introduce where you can places to purchase Zealong Tea, and where is recommended places to purchase it.
To jump straight to the City-by-City List of Locations, please click [Reference] Zealong Tea – Where to Buy (City-by-City List).
Generally, it is not available for purchase in Japan!
First, an important point: Zealong Tea has not yet entered the Japanese market, which means it is generally not available for purchase in Japan.
For example, as of now, a search on Amazon Japan, Rakuten, and Yahoo Shopping shows no results for Zealong Tea products.

Only available for purchase within New Zealand!
Now, let’s take a look at where you can buy Zealong Tea.
① The flagship store is the best place to buy Zealong Tea!
The Zealong flagship store is located in Hamilton (about a 1.5-hour drive from Auckland), and it offers a wide selection of exclusive items such as gift sets and tea sets.
You can also enjoy in-store tastings, allowing you to sample the flavours before choosing your favourites with confidence.
Another popular option is the trial tea bags – lightweight, affordable, and unique – sold individually, making them perfect as easy-to-carry souvenirs.
A luxurious gift bags are also available, ideal for pairing with gift sets

The gift bags used at the flagship store have an elegant, understated design – reminiscent of a luxury jewellery brand.
It may seem like a small touch, but it’s a reassuring detail that makes it easy to present Zealong Tea as a thoughtful gift for someone important or to express your appreciation to those who’ve supported you.
② If buying online, go through the official Zealong Online Store
For those staying in New Zealand for a longer period – such as homestay students or travellers based in one place – the official Zealong online store is a convenient option.
It offers a wide range of products with plenty of stock, so you won’t have to worry about items being sold out.
As of now, Zealong Tea is not available on general online shopping platforms such as Amazon AU or Mighty Ape, so your best option is to order directly from the official store.
[Note on Online Purchases]
The official Zealong online store does not currently offer international shipping to Japan.
(*) According to Zealong, they are positively considering the possibility of online sales within Japan, so it may become possible to purchase Zealong products online in Japan in the near future.
③ Even within New Zealand, Zealong Tea is only available at select retailers
As a premium tea brand, Zealong Tea is not widely available – even within New Zealand.
You’ll typically only find it at a limited number of souvenir shops, duty-free stores, department stores, and high-end supermarkets.
Main places to buy Zealong Tea in New Zealand:
🎁 Souvenir shops (e.g. Aotea Gifts)
🏬 Duty-free stores (e.g. T GALLERIA BY DFS)
🏬 Department stores (e.g. SMITH & CAUGHEY’S)
🛒 Premium supermarkets (e.g. Farro Fresh)
Therefore, you won’t find Zealong Tea at main supermarkets such as Pak’nSave, New World, or Woolworths (Countdown), which are commonly seen in town.

If buying from a souvenir shop, Aotea Gifts is a top recommendation
Aotea Gifts, established in 1979, is New Zealand’s largest souvenir store – so you can shop there with confidence.
出典:(左)Aotea Gifts’ online store、(右)100% Pure New Zealand
And there are five Aotea Gifts locations across New Zealand, making them easy to access during your travels.
Area | Store Name | Address |
Auckland | Auckland Central Store | Commercial Bay 188 Quay Street, Auckland Central |
Queenstown | Queenstown Store | 87 Beach Street, Queenstown 9300 |
Queenstown Mall Store | 30 Ballarat Street, Queenstown 9300 | |
Lake Tekapo | Tekapo Store | State Highway 8, 6 Rapuwai Lane, Lake Tekapo 7945 |
Christchurch | Christchurch Store | 99 Cashel Street, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch 8011 |
(*) Please note: While the Aotea Gifts official website lists a total of six stores, the Rotorua location is currently closed.
However, keep in mind that souvenir shops and duty-free stores may have limited selection and stock.
For example, as of now, the premium supermarket’s online store only offers two types of Zealong Tea: Zealong Aromatic Tea and Zealong Pure Tea.
At souvenir shops, the most popular Zealong products are often low in stock or sold out altogether.
To avoid disappointment – like going out of your way on your last day only to find it’s sold out, or realising that airport duty-free prices are much higher – I highly recommend shopping at the Zealong flagship store or via the official online store whenever possible.
At this stage, Zealong Tea is not available at airports in New Zealand, so if you already have a specific product in mind, it’s best to purchase it at a retail store or online before your departure.
[Note] Still wondering, “Is it really not available in Japan?”
As mentioned earlier, Zealong Tea has not officially entered the Japanese market, so it is generally not available for purchase in Japan.
However, based on my research, there appear to be rare exceptions where individuals or small businesses import it privately.
For example, one such case I found via social media was Rosenberry Tawada, an English garden located in Shiga Prefecture, which had previously served and sold Zealong Tea. However, when I inquired, they confirmed that it is currently sold out and restocking is undecided.
ジーロンティー!

As such, Zealong Tea is a rare tea that is primarily available only within New Zealand, making it a truly special find.
